O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while in high school. Her performance on the show impressed jury, and she received a promotion to an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil won high praises from the judges. But she lost badly in both the Top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were shocked by the results and advised the audience to choose contestants similar to Melissa, who had the best singing abilities. After giving consistently stellar performance from then onwards, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. O'Neil's two further performances of September 7,2005, where O'Neil advanced to the top two spots in the contest. Werner predicted that the morning papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie and become the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil was immediately congratulated by Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
